Ghana's 1 Cedi went through persistent devaluation pressure during this period, with the official exchange rate bearing little resemblance to what the note could actually buy on the street. By the early 1980s, inflation had made the denomination nearly worthless in real terms, and the government's reluctance to rebase the currency created a situation where enormous quantities of low-denomination notes were printed and cycled through rapidly.
Thomas De La Rue retained the Ghana contract through multiple administrations — a consistency unusual given the political turbulence of the era, which included Rawlings' first coup in June 1979.
