Beschrijving voorzijde Draped bust of Marquess Guglielmo IX Paleologo facing left, wearing a distinctive beret, set within a beaded inner circle. The portrait is rendered in a late-medieval Italian style, with fine detailing on the drapery of the shoulder. The peripheral legend in Latin runs around the outer border, separated from the central effigy by a raised rim.

Beschrijving keerzijde Saint Theodore of Amasea depicted as an armored equestrian figure on horseback moving to the left, thrusting a spear downward to slay a dragon prostrate beneath the horse's hooves. The saint is shown in dynamic pose with flowing hair and cloak, the horse rearing over the vanquished beast. Foliage appears in the left field. The abbreviated Latin legend of the saint's name is distributed around the periphery within a beaded border.

Aanvullende informatie

Guglielmo IX ruled Montferrat for over two decades as a marquis perpetually caught between the competing pressures of France and Milan — his political survival depended on careful neutrality during the Italian Wars that erupted after Charles VIII's invasion of 1494. The cavallotto denomination itself was a northern Italian regional type, its name derived from the horse imagery traditional to the Paleologi of Montferrat, a dynasty that had held the marquisate since 1306 through a cadet branch of the Byzantine imperial family.

The CNI II#52 var. attribution signals a die variation not fully catalogued at time of publication — Biaggi#64a provides the more precise reference for this specific emission.
