Ferdinando I took the Neapolitan throne in 1458 under immediate challenge — a baronial revolt backed by René of Anjou nearly ended his reign within years of its start. The cavallo, his copper fractional coinage, was struck to serve the lowest rungs of daily commerce in a kingdom perpetually short of small change. MIR 85/2 distinguishes this variety within a complex series where subtle die differences and mint periods overlap across nearly four decades of continuous production.
