The Liao dynasty was founded by the Khitan people, a semi-nomadic confederation that controlled much of Manchuria and northern China for over two centuries. Their coinage program was notably inconsistent — many Liao emperors issued no coins at all, relying instead on captured Song and Tang currency circulating within their territory. The Zhuangguo Yuanbao is among the rarer Liao issues, attributed to a brief reign period rather than spanning the full dynasty.
Hartill 18.28 is considered genuinely scarce in any grade, a reflection of limited original mintage rather than attrition.
