The characters are framed between the inner rim of the square perforation and a raised outer rim encircling the coin. The flat field shows the characteristic angular, structured brushwork of lishu calligraphy. The entire surface exhibits heavy iron oxidation consistent with the coin's age and ferrous composition. |

Zhenghe Tongbao iron cash were produced under Emperor Huizong, the Northern Song ruler better remembered for his calligraphy and painting than for his administration. The Clerical script variety is one of several script styles issued concurrently for this reign title — Huizong himself is credited with designing the Slender Gold script versions, making the parallel use of lishu a deliberate aesthetic contrast rather than a replacement. Iron coinage expanded significantly during the Northern Song as copper shortages forced regional mints, particularly in Shaanxi and Sichuan, to substitute ferrous metal. Most iron cash corroded heavily in circulation and in the ground.
