Obverse description Four large seal-script (zhuanshu) Chinese ideograms arranged symmetrically around a central square perforation, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 昭 (top), 通 (right), 武 (bottom), 寶 (left), forming the legend 昭武通寶 (Zhaowu Tongbao). The characters are boldly cast in high relief with the angular, archaic forms characteristic of seal script, set within a plain raised rim and a raised square rim surrounding the central hole. The flat field between the characters shows no additional ornament or mint marks. The overall design is typical of Southern Chinese rebel-issue cash coins of the late seventeenth century.
