Obverse description Central square hole flanked by four Chinese seal-script (zhuanshu) characters arranged in cruciform reading order: 元 (Yuan) at top, 寶 (Bao) at bottom, 通 (Tong) at right, and 佑 (You) at left, forming the reign-era inscription 元祐通寶 (Yuanyou Tongbao). The characters are rendered in elegant, formal seal script with bold strokes and rounded terminals characteristic of Northern Song dynasty cash coinage. The flat, undecorated field surrounds each character, and the coin retains a raised rim on both the inner edge of the central perforation and the outer border.
