| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, with four Chinese ideograms arranged in the four cardinal quadrants reading clockwise in cursive running script (xingshu): 元 (Yuan, top), 祐 (You, right), 寶 (Bao, bottom), 通 (Tong, left), together forming the reign-title legend 'Yuanyou Tongbao.' The characters display the fluid, connected brushstroke qualities characteristic of xingshu calligraphy, distinguishing this type from the regular-script (kaishu) issues of the same reign. A plain outer raised rim encircles the field. The coin exhibits heavy iron oxidation and surface encrustation consistent with prolonged burial, with the legend remaining legible despite significant corrosion. |
