Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by a raised inner rim, with four Chinese characters arranged in the cardinal positions reading clockwise from the top: 元 (top), 祐 (right), 通 (left), 寶 (bottom), rendered in the cursive running script (xingshu) style. The characters are boldly cast in raised relief against a flat field, bounded by a raised inner square rim around the central hole and a raised outer rim encircling the coin's periphery. The fluid, dynamic strokes characteristic of xingshu calligraphy are clearly articulated, giving the legend a distinctive aesthetic associated with the Yuanyou era reign title of Emperor Zhezong of the Northern Song Dynasty.
