The Yuanfeng reign of Emperor Shenzong was defined by the bitter struggle over Wang Anshi's New Policies — a sweeping reform program that reorganized taxation, military conscription, and state finance. Coinage production expanded sharply during this period as the reforms injected liquidity into local markets through the baojia and qingmiao loan systems. The running-script rendering on this type is attributed to court calligraphers rather than mint artisans, a practice Shenzong personally endorsed.
Schjoth 552 distinguishes the large-bodied examples from smaller contemporaneous strikes — a meaningful separation, as die workmanship varies considerably across the northern mints supplying Kaifeng.
