| Obverse description | Four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central square perforation, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 咸 (top), 通 (right), 豐 (bottom), 寶 (left), forming the legend 'Xianfeng Tongbao' (Auspicious Abundance, Universal Currency). The characters are boldly cast in raised relief within a plain, slightly raised rim. The field surface shows the characteristic granular texture typical of Qing dynasty cast cash coinage. |
