Obverse description Four traditional Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are disposed in cruciform arrangement around the central square hole, read in the conventional sequence of top, bottom, right, left. The characters 咸豐通寶 (Xianfeng Tongbao) identify the reign title of the Xianfeng Emperor and denote universal currency. The legends are cast in low relief against a flat, unadorned field, with a raised inner rim framing the square perforation and a raised outer rim encircling the coin.
