| Obverse description | Four traditional Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are disposed in cruciform arrangement around the central square hole, read in the conventional sequence of top, bottom, right, left. The characters 咸豐通寶 (Xianfeng Tongbao) identify the reign title of the Xianfeng Emperor and denote universal currency. The legends are cast in low relief against a flat, unadorned field, with a raised inner rim framing the square perforation and a raised outer rim encircling the coin. |

| Reverse description | The reverse is divided into two vertical registers by the central square hole, bearing the mint name rendered in two scripts. The Manchu script inscription ᠪᠣᠣ ᡩᡠᠩ (Boo-dung) is split to the left and right of the perforation and read vertically, identifying the Board of Revenue Mint in Beijing. The single Chinese character 正 (Zheng) appears above the square hole in the upper register. Raised inner and outer rims frame the field, consistent with standard Qing dynasty cash coinage production. |
