Obverse description Round cast brass cash coin with a central square perforation. The field surrounding the square hole bears four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu), arranged in cruciform fashion reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 咸豐通寶 (Xianfeng Tongbao), meaning 'Xianfeng [reign] universal currency'. The characters are rendered in a formal, upright style typical of Qing dynasty Board of Revenue issues. The coin surface shows characteristic casting texture with a plain raised rim encircling the field.
