Obverse description Central square hole (cash hole) flanked by four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu), arranged in cruciform fashion and read top-to-bottom then right-to-left: 咸 (top), 通 (right), 寶 (bottom), 豐 (left), forming the reign legend 'Xianfeng Tongbao'. The characters are rendered in a plain, unadorned style typical of Qing dynasty cast cash coinage, set within a flat inner rim surrounding the square perforation and bounded by a raised outer rim.
