Obverse description Four Chinese characters in kaishu (regular script) are arranged in cruciform disposition around the central square perforation, read in the traditional top-bottom-right-left sequence to render the legend 咸豐通寶 (Xianfeng Tongbao), meaning 'Xianfeng [reign] Universal Currency.' The characters are cast in bold relief against a plain, unadorned field, framed by a raised inner rim encircling the square hole and a raised outer rim at the coin's periphery. The casting exhibits the confident, broad strokes characteristic of mid-Qing dynasty cash coinage, with minimal ornamentation consistent with the standard 1-cash denomination.
