Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by four bold Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu), arranged in the traditional reading order: top (咸), right (通), bottom (豐), left (寶), collectively reading 咸豐通寶 (Xianfeng Tongbao), the reign title of the Xianfeng Emperor paired with the phrase meaning 'universal currency.' The characters are deeply cast and well-defined against a flat, unadorned field, with no decorative border other than the plain raised rim. The coin exhibits the classic format of Qing dynasty cash coinage, cast in zinc with a characteristically dark patina.
