附加信息

The Boo-chiowan (Board of Revenue) mint in Beijing began striking iron cash during the Xianfeng reign as an emergency measure — silver and copper supplies were under severe strain from the costs of suppressing the Taiping Rebellion, which had erupted in 1850 and would grind on until 1864. Iron coinage was deeply unpopular; it rusted, it was heavy relative to its face value, and the public resisted it. Hartill 22.724 represents the lowest denomination in a series that quickly inflated upward as the Qing fiscal situation deteriorated.
