Obverse description Central square perforation (cash hole) surrounded by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform reading order: 萬 (top), 曆 (bottom), 通 (right), 寶 (left), rendered in regular script (kaishu). The four characters read collectively as 'Wanli Tongbao', denoting the reign title of the Wanli Emperor and the meaning 'circulating treasure'. The coin exhibits a plain raised inner rim bordering the square hole and a raised outer rim encircling the coin's periphery. The field is unadorned apart from the inscriptions, and the casting surfaces display characteristic Ming Dynasty workmanship with bold, well-formed strokes.
