Two Chinese seal-script (zhuanshu) characters flank the central hole in the conventional right-to-left reading order: 貨 (Huo, meaning 'currency' or 'goods') to the right and 泉 (Quan, meaning 'spring' or 'cash') to the left. The characters are rendered in low relief directly against the plain inner field, without the raised inner rim (inner cord) characteristic of many contemporaneous issues. The outer rim is a simple raised band encircling the coin, and the flat field shows the natural texture and green-brown patina typical of cast Han-period bronze. |
