Wang Mang's monetary reforms were among the most ambitious — and catastrophically mismanaged — currency interventions in Chinese history. Between 7 and 23 AD he issued at least five successive reform coinage systems, each attempt to stabilize a collapsing economy making conditions measurably worse. This piece belongs to the fifth and final reform, introduced around 14 AD, by which point public refusal to use the new coinages had become so widespread that Mang resorted to threatening violators with enslavement.
The inner rim variant distinguishes this from the more common rimless strikes of the same issue — a subtle die modification whose administrative rationale remains unresolved in the literature.
