Vĩnh Thọ was the reign title of Lê Thần Tông during his second reign — an unusual circumstance in which the emperor was restored to the throne after his son Lê Chân Tông died without an heir in 1649. By the time this cash was struck, real power had long since passed to the Trịnh lords, who controlled the northern Lê court as de facto rulers. The emperor's name on the coin was ceremonial in the most literal sense.
The running script variety distinguished here from standard issues reflects workshop-level variation common to Vietnamese cast coinage of this period, where die preparation was inconsistent across casting runs.
