In 1863, the Hong Kong government was actively exploring a low-denomination copper coinage to serve the colony's working poor, who relied heavily on Chinese cash coins for small transactions. The 1 Cash denomination was proposed as a direct competitor to those indigenous coins — familiar in concept, British in authority. It never entered production. Trial strikes like this one were evaluated and ultimately rejected, with officials deciding the denomination was too small to be practical alongside existing mil coinage.
KM#Pn69 survivors are extremely few.
