| Obverse description | Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in the traditional four-character cash coin format, read top to bottom and right to left around a central square perforation. The characters 嗣德通寶 (Tự Đức Thông Bảo) occupy the four cardinal positions relative to the central hole: 嗣 (top), 德 (bottom), 通 (right), and 寶 (left). The legends are cast in raised relief against a flat, unadorned field, with no inner or outer rim decoration beyond a plain raised border. The inscription identifies the reign title of Emperor Tự Đức and denotes the coin as standard currency. |
