The Trần Tuân Rebellion of 1516 was one of several simultaneous uprisings that effectively dismembered Lê authority during the catastrophic reign of Lê Tương Dực, when the northern Vietnamese delta descended into competing warlord factions, pretender courts, and peasant revolts. Trần Tuân's movement, operating in the Red River delta region, was significant enough to issue its own coinage — a direct assertion of administrative legitimacy rather than mere military posturing.
Rebel cash issues from this period are among the rarest Vietnamese coins to authenticate, partly because production was brief and partly because victorious Lê forces had obvious incentive to suppress their circulation.
