| Beschrijving voorzijde | Four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform fashion around a central square perforation, read in the traditional sequence top-bottom, right-left. The character 同 (Tong) appears above the hole, 治 (Zhi) below, 通 (Tong) to the right, and 寶 (Bao) to the left, together forming the reign title legend 'Tongzhi Tongbao' ('Universal currency of the Tongzhi [Emperor]'). The bold, well-spaced characters are cast in relief against a flat field, framed by a plain inner rim surrounding the square hole and an outer raised border. The casting exhibits the characteristic style of mid-Qing dynasty Board of Revenue issues. |
