Obverse description Four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform fashion around a central square perforation, read in the traditional sequence top-bottom, right-left. The character 同 (Tong) appears above the hole, 治 (Zhi) below, 通 (Tong) to the right, and 寶 (Bao) to the left, together forming the reign title legend 'Tongzhi Tongbao' ('Universal currency of the Tongzhi [Emperor]'). The bold, well-spaced characters are cast in relief against a flat field, framed by a plain inner rim surrounding the square hole and an outer raised border. The casting exhibits the characteristic style of mid-Qing dynasty Board of Revenue issues.
Obverse script Chinese (traditional, regular script)

Reverse description Two Manchu script characters cast in relief on either side of the central square perforation, reading vertically and separated by the hole. The character 'Boo' (ᠪᠣᠣ) appears to the right of the hole and 'yūn' (ᡡᠨ) to the left, together denoting the mint name 'Boo-yūn' (Board of Revenue Mint, Beijing). The Manchu characters are rendered in the cursive style typical of Qing cash coinage, set within a flat field bounded by a plain inner rim at the square perforation and a raised outer border. The reverse surface shows the characteristic patina and casting texture of a circulated Qing dynasty brass cash coin.
