| Obverse description | Cast brass cash coin bearing four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion around a central square hole, read in the traditional order of top, bottom, right, left. The inscription 同治通寶 (Tongzhi Tongbao) is rendered in regular script (kaishu), with the reign title 同治 (Tongzhi) positioned at the top and right, and the denomination legend 通寶 (Universal Currency) at the bottom and left. The characters are well-formed and slightly raised within a flat field, bounded by an inner square rim and an outer circular rim. |
