| Obverse description | Cast brass cash coin with a central square hole flanked by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform pattern within the field. Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in the traditional manner, the reign title legend 同治通寶 (Tongzhi Tongbao) is rendered in regular script (kaishu), with two characters positioned above and below the central perforation and two characters to its left and right. The flat, undecorated rim is raised and well-defined, enclosing the plain field. Two distinct varieties exist: Hartill 22.1136 with an open-headed 通 (Tong) character, and Hartill 22.1137 with a closed-headed 通 (Tong) character. |
