| Obverse description | Round cast iron coin with a central square perforation surrounded by a raised inner rim. Four Chinese characters in Seal script (篆書) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading clockwise from top: 天聖元寶 (Tiansheng Yuanbao). The characters are rendered in the formal, angular Seal script style characteristic of Northern Song dynasty cash coinage. The field between the legends and the raised outer rim is flat and largely plain. The coin exhibits the broad, prominent outer rim typical of Song iron cash. |
