The Western Xia state, established by the Tangut people in what is now Ningxia and Gansu, maintained a distinct written script deliberately created in 1036 under Emperor Jingzong — a conscious effort to resist cultural absorption by the Song and Liao dynasties pressing from the east. Coins bearing that script are among the few surviving artifacts where the Tangut language appears in an official monetary capacity. The Tianqing reign period ran under Emperor Huanzong, during a dynasty that would be entirely annihilated by the Mongols in 1227, with such thoroughness that Tangut numismatic material remained poorly catalogued in the West until the late twentieth century.
