Obverse description Cast brass cash coin of traditional Chinese round form with a central square hole. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central perforation, read top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 天 (tiān) above, 太 (tài) to the right, 國 (guó) below, and 平 (píng) to the left, forming the reign legend 太平天國 (Taiping Heavenly Kingdom). The characters are bold and well-defined in raised relief within a plain inner and outer raised rim. The field shows the characteristic rough, pitted surface typical of cast coinage of this period.
