| Obverse description | Cast copper cash coin of traditional Chinese square-hole type. Four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion around the central square perforation, reading clockwise from top: 天 (Thiên), 資 (Tư), 元 (Nguyên), 寶 (Bảo), forming the reign era legend 'Thiên Tư Nguyên Bảo'. The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) in raised relief within a plain inner rim and an outer raised border. The field shows typical cast surface texture with patination consistent with age. |

| Additional information |
Thiên Tư Nguyên Bảo was issued under Lý Cao Tông, whose reign from 1176 to 1210 was marked by near-continuous internal rebellion and a progressive collapse of Lý dynasty authority in the Vietnamese highlands. The "Nhất" (one) counter-stamp or inscription variant catalogued by Barker as 7.2 distinguishes this from the base type — such positional or numerical variants on Vietnamese cash coins often reflected sequential casting batches from different furnace runs rather than deliberate denomination marking.
