Thiên Phúc Trấn Bảo cash were struck under Lê Hoàn, the general who seized power in 980 after the Đinh dynasty collapsed into a succession crisis — his young emperor deposed, his regent role dissolved into outright rule. The coins are among the earliest Vietnamese cast copper cash attributable to a named reign, predating most of the organized monetary infrastructure that later dynasties would build. Lê Hoàn's administration was preoccupied with repelling a Song Chinese invasion in 981, which his forces defeated decisively at the Bạch Đằng River.
