| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised inner rim and a broad flat field, bearing four Chinese characters arranged in the traditional cross pattern reading top, right, bottom, left: 天 (Thiên), 通 (Thông), 寶 (Bảo), 興 (Hưng). The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) and read top-to-bottom, right-to-left as Thiên Hưng Thông Bảo, denoting the Thiên Hưng reign era of Lê Nghi Dân (1459–1460) and meaning 'Universal Currency of Thiên Hưng.' The coin displays a patina of blue-green verdigris consistent with aged cast copper, with a plain outer rim encircling the field. |

| Additional information |
Thiên Hưng was the reign title of Lê Nghi Dân, who seized the Vietnamese throne in early 1459 by murdering the reigning emperor Lê Nhân Tông — his own half-brother — along with the empress dowager. His rule lasted barely sixteen months before the court nobility engineered his overthrow and installed Lê Thánh Tông, one of the most capable rulers in the entire Lê dynasty's history. Coins struck under Lê Nghi Dân are consequently among the shortest-lived issues of the series.
