| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised inner rim and a broad flat field, bearing four Chinese characters arranged in the traditional cross pattern reading top, right, bottom, left: 天 (Thiên), 通 (Thông), 寶 (Bảo), 興 (Hưng). The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) and read top-to-bottom, right-to-left as Thiên Hưng Thông Bảo, denoting the Thiên Hưng reign era of Lê Nghi Dân (1459–1460) and meaning 'Universal Currency of Thiên Hưng.' The coin displays a patina of blue-green verdigris consistent with aged cast copper, with a plain outer rim encircling the field. |
