Thiệu Trị, the fourth Nguyễn emperor, ruled for just six years before dying of illness in 1847 — a short reign that nonetheless produced a notably complex cash coinage. The "smaller type" designation distinguishes this issue from the heavier, larger-flan pieces struck concurrently; the Nguyễn board of revenue periodically adjusted cash specifications in response to copper and zinc supply constraints, which accounts for the parallel size variants now catalogued separately by Barker and Toda.
Board of Works foundries at Huế were the primary source, though provincial casting introduced subtle weight and alloy inconsistencies that collectors still use to attribute examples by origin.
