The Thái Đức reign title belongs to Nguyễn Nhạc, the eldest of the three Tây Sơn brothers whose rebellion dismantled Nguyễn lord rule in the south and briefly threatened the entire Vietnamese political order. Nguyễn Nhạc proclaimed himself emperor in 1778, establishing his capital at Quy Nhơn — a reign that lasted on paper until 1788 but was increasingly overshadowed by his younger brother Nguyễn Huệ's military dominance. The addition of Vạn Tuế, meaning "ten thousand years of life," marks this as a ceremonial or auspicious issue rather than purely utilitarian coinage.
Tây Sơn cash coins are notably inconsistent in execution, reflecting decentralized production across a regime perpetually at war.
