The Thái Đức reign title belongs to Nguyễn Nhạc, eldest of the three Tây Sơn brothers whose rebellion dismantled Nguyễn lord control over southern Vietnam in the 1770s. Nguyễn Nhạc proclaimed himself emperor at Quy Nhơn in 1778, and coinage under this title was struck during a period of active military campaigning — his forces had already sacked Gia Định in 1776-77. The Tây Sơn monetary output is poorly documented, and attribution debates persist across Barker and Toda's catalogues on several related types.
