| Obverse description | Cast bronze cash coin featuring a central square perforation surrounded by an inner raised rim. The four-character legend 太定通寶 (Taiding Tongbao) is arranged in the four cardinal positions around the central hole in regular script (kaishu), reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in the traditional Chinese manner. The characters are rendered in low relief and are heavily worn, consistent with the crude provincial casting style of the Yunnan-Guizhou tribal issues. An outer raised rim encloses the entire field, and the coin exhibits a thick green patina with areas of cuprite, typical of buried bronze cash of this period. |

The casting seam and irregular flan edge are characteristic of the primitive sand-casting techniques employed by the Yunnan-Guizhou tribal workshops of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. |
