Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu), arranged in the traditional cash coin reading order: top, bottom, right, left. The four ideograms read 嗣德通寶 (Tự Đức Thông Bảo), denoting the reign title of Emperor Tự Đức and meaning 'universal currency.' The characters are rendered in bold relief within a plain, raised border, with each character occupying one of the four quadrants flanking the central hole. The field is otherwise unadorned, faithful to the classical Vietnamese cash coin aesthetic.
