| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square boss, with four Chinese seal-script (zhuanshu) ideograms arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading clockwise from top: 紹 (Shao), 聖 (Sheng), 元 (Yuan), 寶 (Bao). The characters are boldly cast in relief within a plain inner field, enclosed by a raised inner rim around the square hole and a broad outer rim. The overall design is characteristic of Northern Song dynasty cash coinage, with the seal script lending an archaic, formal aesthetic to the inscription. |
