Shaosheng was the reign period of Emperor Zhezong, who assumed personal rule in 1093 after the death of his grandmother Empress Dowager Gao, the regent who had reversed Wang Anshi's New Policies reforms. Zhezong immediately restored the reformist faction to power, and the Shaosheng coinage was struck under that politically charged reversal. The running-script calligraphy on this type is attributed to the emperor's own hand — imperial calligraphy on cash coins was a deliberate assertion of personal authority during the Song.
The crescent variety is a positional mint mark, its placement distinguishing die batches within the series. Hartill 16.312 is among the scarcer crescent positions documented for this type.
