Obverse description Central square hole surrounded by four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu), reading clockwise from the top: 光 (Quang), 通 (Thông), 中 (Trung), 寶 (Bảo), forming the legend Quang Trung Thông Bảo, meaning 'Universal currency of [Emperor] Quang Trung.' The character 寶 (Bảo) is rendered in a variant form distinguishing this emission. The inscription is set within a plain inner rim encircling the square perforation, with a raised outer rim bordering the coin's circumference. The field is unadorned, consistent with Vietnamese cast cash coinage of the late eighteenth century.
