A single Chinese character, 五 (Wu, meaning 'five'), is cast in raised relief in the lower field below the central square hole, indicating this coin was issued in the fifth year of the Qingyuan era (1199). The remaining fields above and to the sides of the hole are blank. The surface shows heavy green cuprite and malachite patination typical of excavated Southern Song bronze cash. |
