Obverse description Round cast iron coin with a central square perforation, typical of Tang dynasty cash coinage. The obverse field bears four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion reading clockwise: 乾元重寶 (Qianyuan Zhongbao), cast in relief against a flat, unadorned field. The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) and exhibit the bold, somewhat crude casting characteristic of provincial iron issues. The rim is a plain, raised border encircling the legend, and the surfaces show heavy oxidation and encrustation consistent with an iron alloy of this period.
