Beschrijving voorzijde Cast iron cash coin featuring a central square perforation surrounded by a raised inner rim. The four-character reign title inscription 乾祐元寶 is arranged in regular script (kaishu) reading top-bottom-right-left around the central hole, with one character positioned at each cardinal point. The characters are boldly cast in raised relief against a flat field, enclosed between the inner square rim and a plain outer raised rim. The coin exhibits a heavily corroded, rough surface consistent with its iron composition and considerable age, with reddish-brown patination across the obverse field.

Beschrijving keerzijde Plain cast iron reverse featuring a central square perforation flanked by a raised inner rim and a plain outer raised rim. The field is entirely uninscribed and smooth in design, though the surface displays pronounced corrosion and uneven texture characteristic of aged iron coinage. A faint raised line is visible on one side of the inner rim, possibly a casting artifact. The reverse retains the same reddish-brown iron oxide patination as the obverse.

Aanvullende informatie

The Western Xia — a Tangut state occupying the Ordos and Hexi Corridor — cast iron coinage largely out of necessity. Copper was scarce in the region and tightly controlled; iron served as the pragmatic substitute for everyday exchange throughout much of the dynasty's existence. The Qianyou reign period under Emperor Renzong lasted over two decades, one of the longer and more stable intervals in Western Xia history, which accounts for the relative breadth of surviving iron types from this issue.

Hartill distinguishes the regular script variety from contemporaneous seal-script strikes of the same reign, and the two are not always easy to separate from worn examples.
