Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left, the legend 乾隆通寶 (Qianlong Tongbao, meaning 'Currency of the Qianlong [era]') occupies the four cardinal positions relative to the square hole. The characters are bold and well-defined in relief against a flat field, enclosed by a raised inner rim surrounding the square hole and a broad outer rim. The overall casting is typical of the Qing dynasty Board of Revenue Mint, with broad rims and large characters consistent with the early emission of this type. |
