Banten's tin cash coinage occupied a peculiar position in the regional economy — these pieces circulated alongside VOC-issued currency and Chinese cash imports, all competing for use in the same markets. The sultanate's decision to mint in tin rather than copper reflects both the metal's local availability through Bangka and Belitung trade networks and the chronic shortage of higher-value metals that plagued independent Indonesian polities under Dutch commercial pressure.
