The Tukhus were one of the Western Turkic tribal confederations operating in the Semirechye region during the 8th century, minting their own bronze issues as local authority fragmented following the collapse of the Western Turkic Qaghanate. The absence of the central casting hole — standard on most contemporary Sogdian-influenced issues of the region — on this variety is the distinguishing feature behind Kamyshev's separate classification. Whether this reflects a deliberate departure or a workshop anomaly remains unresolved in the literature.
